Hybrid Cars May Become Cheaper as Government Plans Major Tax Relief

Islamabad: The federal government is considering reducing the sales tax on imported and locally assembled hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) from 25 percent to 18 percent in a move aimed at making environmentally friendly vehicles more affordable for consumers.
According to media reports, a summary of the proposal has already been sent to the Finance Division. However, the tax reduction will require final approval from the federal cabinet before it can be implemented.
The previously available reduced sales tax concession on hybrid vehicles expired on June 30, 2026. As a result, the sales tax rate increased to 25 percent on July 1, 2026, leading to higher vehicle prices and a decline in sales.
Why Hybrid Vehicles Matter
Hybrid vehicles operate using both petrol and electric power, making them more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional vehicles. They also help reduce harmful emissions and contribute to improved air quality.
With major cities such as Karachi and Lahore facing increasing levels of air pollution, experts believe the wider adoption of hybrid vehicles could play an important role in promoting cleaner transportation across the country.
Pakistan is currently grappling with rising fuel prices and the growing challenges of climate change. Analysts say that lowering taxes on hybrid vehicles could encourage more consumers to shift away from traditional petrol-powered cars.
Impact on Vehicle Prices and the Auto Industry
Industry experts believe the proposed reduction in sales tax is likely to lower the prices of hybrid vehicles, boosting consumer demand. The move could also benefit Pakistan’s local automotive industry, particularly manufacturers assembling hybrid models from brands such as Toyota, Haval, and Hyundai.
In addition to making hybrid vehicles more accessible, the policy is expected to support Pakistan’s environmental goals by encouraging the use of cleaner and more sustainable modes of transport.
Investment and Employment Opportunities
Pakistan’s hybrid vehicle market has witnessed significant growth in recent years. The proposed tax relief is expected to attract new investment, create employment opportunities, and improve access to environmentally friendly transportation for middle-income consumers.
If approved by the federal cabinet, the new 18 percent sales tax rate on hybrid vehicles could be implemented in the near future, bringing positive economic and environmental benefits for the country.
