Pakistan, Canada Agree to Revive Trade and Investment Cooperation During Foreign Minister’s Visit

ISLAMABAD:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand during her historic visit to Pakistan, with both sides agreeing to revive bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

During the meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the signing ceremony of the import protocol for Canadian canola, marking a step forward in agricultural trade between the two countries.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand also held talks with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. According to a joint statement, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade, investment, people-to-people ties, and high-level exchanges.

Canada praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the region and its role in facilitating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, expressing support for the ceasefire and the implementation of the agreement.

The two sides agreed to expedite negotiations on the **Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA)** and to reactivate the **Pakistan–Canada Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment**.

The joint statement also announced plans to expand cooperation in clean energy, mining, agriculture, infrastructure, advanced technology, and environmental protection. Canada pledged to continue supporting Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts through the United Nations, Interpol, and other international institutions, while also providing development assistance in education, healthcare, and climate change initiatives.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation on Afghanistan, counterterrorism, regional peace and security, and coordination at the United Nations and other international forums.

Separately, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to discuss cooperation against illegal immigration, human trafficking, and cybercrime. She also held talks with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who highlighted Pakistan’s position on regional stability and global peace.
