Government Opposes FIR Against Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Does Not Want to Prolong Matter: Rana Sanaullah
Islamabad: Prime Minister’s Adviser and senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah has clarified that the federal government does not support registering an FIR against Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and has no intention of escalating the matter.
Speaking during a television programme, Rana Sanaullah dismissed reports suggesting that legal action was being considered against the veteran politician. He emphasized that neither the government nor the PML-N believes in adopting an aggressive approach toward political opponents.
“We have not registered any FIR against Maulana Fazlur Rehman,” he said. “Personally, and to the best of my knowledge regarding the Prime Minister’s thinking, we are completely opposed to any FIR being lodged against him. We also do not wish to prolong this matter unnecessarily.”
Rana Sanaullah explained that government ministers responded to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s recent remarks because of concerns that such statements could negatively affect the morale of Pakistan’s armed forces and the families of fallen soldiers.
He said it was necessary to address the situation to ensure that security personnel serving on the country’s borders and fighting terrorism remain confident and motivated. He added that the families of martyrs should not feel distressed or demoralized by political statements that may be perceived as undermining their sacrifices.

“The statements made by ministers and party leaders were intended to defend this sensitive national interest and to ensure that the morale of our armed forces and security personnel is not affected,” he stated.
Commenting on Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s political stance, Rana Sanaullah said that the government has no objection to political criticism or differences of opinion. However, he noted that certain remarks warranted review and careful assessment to safeguard the dignity of national institutions and maintain respect for the country’s interests.
The senior PML-N leader reiterated that the government’s policy remains rooted in political dialogue and restraint rather than legal or punitive action against its opponents.
