Eco-Friendly Vessel ‘Grande Shanghai’ Docks at Karachi Port, Marking New Era in Maritime Trade

Karachi: The Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel Grande Shanghai has docked at Karachi Port, symbolizing a new trend in sustainable maritime trade and environmentally friendly shipping technologies.

According to port authorities, Grande Shanghai is among the few vessels in the world that utilize solar energy and is the first ship of its kind to dock at Karachi Port with the capability to operate without emitting air pollutants while berthed.

The vessel is a hybrid-energy ship equipped with 5 megawatt-hour (MWh) lithium-ion batteries, enabling it to conduct port operations with zero emissions during its stay at the harbor. This innovative technology significantly reduces its environmental footprint and contributes to cleaner port operations.

Spread across approximately 2,500 square meters of deck space, the ship is fitted with solar panels that help power its onboard systems. The vessel combines a high cargo-carrying capacity with advanced environmental sustainability features, reflecting the maritime industry’s growing commitment to greener technologies.

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) stated that the arrival of Grande Shanghai represents the future of global maritime transportation—one that is more environmentally responsible, technologically advanced, and operationally efficient.

Port officials described the docking of the vessel as a significant milestone for Karachi Port and a positive step toward promoting sustainable shipping practices in Pakistan’s maritime sector.
