K-Electric Rejects Viral Claim About Permanent Loss of Protected Consumer Status
KARACHI: K-Electric has dismissed as misleading a viral social media claim alleging that consumers who use more than 200 electricity units in a single month permanently lose their protected consumer status.
According to a clarification issued by the power utility, no changes have been made to the eligibility criteria for the protected category, and consumers should not rely on unverified information circulating on social media.
A K-Electric spokesperson explained that if an eligible residential Non-Time of Use (Non-TOU) consumer exceeds 200 units of electricity consumption in any one month, the protected status is not permanently revoked.
The utility stated that if the same consumer subsequently keeps monthly electricity consumption at 200 units or below for six consecutive months, the protected consumer status can be restored in accordance with the applicable rules.
K-Electric urged consumers to verify any information related to electricity bills, protected category eligibility, or other policies through the company’s official communication channels before acting on it. The utility also advised the public to avoid sharing or relying on unverified notices circulating on social media.
