Young Doctor Killed in Karachi Bank Robbery Shootout; Police Launch Investigation

KARACHI: Police have launched an investigation into the death of 28-year-old doctor Akash, who was killed during an armed robbery near Three Swords in Clifton, Karachi. His family has announced they will stage a sit-in with his body until those responsible are arrested.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South, Mehrooz Ali, said the incident occurred during an exchange of gunfire between armed robbers and a bank security guard.

According to the SSP, the victim was traveling in a car with his father and cousin after withdrawing cash from one bank and heading to another. As the vehicle stopped near the bank, robbers approached from behind. The bank security guard allegedly mistook the occupants of the car for the suspects and opened fire, prompting the robbers to return fire.

Police said the vehicle was carrying two cash packets containing Rs25 million each. The robbers escaped with one of the packets after the shooting. Investigators are examining the crime scene and are working to determine whether Dr. Akash was struck by a bullet fired by the security guard or the robbers.

Meanwhile, Dr. Akash’s body was shifted from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre to the morgue.

The victim’s uncle, Khem Chand, said his nephew was fatally shot outside the bank. He added that Dr. Akash had been serving at Jinnah Hospital for the past two years and was only 28 years old. The family has vowed to continue their protest until the perpetrators are arrested.
