Pakistan Begins Talks with Netflix and Amazon Prime, Plans to Launch Its Own OTT Platform
Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has announced that the Government of Pakistan has begun discussions with global streaming platforms, including Netflix and Amazon Prime, to expand the international reach of Pakistani films and television dramas.
In a statement posted on X, the minister said the initiative aims to establish long-term partnerships for local content creators while ensuring greater global visibility for Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
Ahsan Iqbal said Pakistani dramas and films are internationally recognized for their quality and enjoy strong demand among audiences worldwide. He added that under the government’s “Uraan Pakistan” export initiative, the creative and cultural industries have been identified as a key pillar of the country’s export strategy.
The minister acknowledged that major OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime serve as important gateways to global audiences. However, he claimed that Pakistani content has not received its due representation on these platforms because of what he described as “regional politics.”

According to Ahsan Iqbal, the government is currently negotiating with Netflix and other international streaming companies to revise the existing regional framework, with the goal of securing fairer access for Pakistani productions and creating sustainable opportunities for local filmmakers and content creators.
He also revealed that, alongside these negotiations, the government has decided to develop Pakistan’s own independent OTT (Over-the-Top) streaming platform. The proposed platform is intended to showcase Pakistani stories, culture, and talent directly to audiences around the world.
The minister expressed confidence that the initiative would strengthen Pakistan’s film and television industry, enhance its international presence, generate significant revenue, and contribute to foreign exchange earnings under the Uraan Pakistan initiative.
