Lahore Introduces Immediate Licence Suspension for Reckless Driving and Fatal Accidents

LAHORE: The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore has announced strict new measures to curb the rising number of road accidents, ordering the immediate suspension of driving licences for motorists involved in reckless driving or fatal traffic crashes.

According to the new directives, any driver found responsible for a fatal accident due to negligence will have their driving licence suspended immediately. The policy also applies to motorists caught speeding, driving recklessly, or engaging in dangerous behavior on city roads.

Traffic police officials said licences will be suspended for a period ranging from six months to three years, depending on the severity of the violation. In cases involving fatal accidents, the restoration of a suspended licence will require a court order, and the traffic police will not have the authority to reinstate it independently.

The CTO further warned that any individual caught driving a vehicle or motorcycle while their licence is suspended will face criminal proceedings rather than a routine traffic fine. Such offenders will be arrested and prosecuted under the relevant laws.

The Lahore Traffic Police said the measures are part of a zero-tolerance policy aimed at improving road safety and protecting lives. Traffic wardens have been instructed to enforce the law strictly and take action against all violators without exception, regardless of their influence or status.

Officials emphasized that the new policy is intended to discourage dangerous driving practices and reduce the number of preventable road accidents across the city.
