Government Decides to End Fuel Subsidy Across Pakistan

Islamabad (News Desk) — The government has decided to abolish fuel subsidies being provided across the country, according to an official statement.

A meeting of the National Steering Committee on fuel subsidies was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar.

The statement said that subsidies previously given to motorcycle riders, small farmers, public transport, and freight transport operators have been discontinued. The subsidy scheme was applicable across all provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials noted that global fuel prices have significantly declined, and the benefit of this reduction has already been passed on to consumers.

The committee, with approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, agreed to phase out the fuel subsidy program.

Under the scheme, motorcycles, rickshaws, and vehicles up to 800cc were receiving subsidies ranging from Rs50 to Rs100 per litre. Public and goods transport operators were reportedly receiving monthly subsidies of Rs70,000 to Rs100,000 to help keep fares low, while small farmers were provided Rs100 per litre subsidy on diesel.

With the latest decision, all categories under the fuel subsidy program will no longer receive financial relief, marking a significant shift in the government’s energy pricing policy.
