KP Chief Minister Writes to GB Top Court Chief Justice Seeking Judicial Intervention for Transparent Elections

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Khan Afridi has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Appellate Court Gilgit-Baltistan, requesting judicial intervention to ensure transparency in the upcoming elections in the region.

A copy of the letter has also been sent to Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi.

In his correspondence, the KP chief minister expressed concern over reports regarding the electoral environment in Gilgit-Baltistan, stating that one political party is allegedly facing obstacles in conducting political activities, public gatherings, and campaign movements.

He further highlighted reports of harassment of political workers, illegal detentions, and restrictions on political activities, warning that such actions could seriously damage the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

The chief minister emphasized that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees all political parties and citizens the fundamental right to participate in free, fair, and transparent elections, and any deviation from these principles undermines democratic values.

He requested the court to issue directives ensuring free and fair elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, including an immediate halt to alleged unlawful harassment, arrests, and restrictions on political workers and leadership.

He also urged that all political parties be granted equal opportunity to carry out their election campaigns without discrimination, and that prompt action be taken against any violations of constitutional and democratic rights during the electoral process.

Sohail Afridi expressed hope that timely judicial intervention would help ensure credible, transparent, and fair elections in Gilgit-Baltistan and safeguard citizens’ democratic right to vote.
