Illegal Jirga in Sukkur Orders Killing After Boy Refuses “Vani” Decision

ISLAMABAD: An illegal jirga in Sukkur has allegedly issued a controversial ruling in a case involving accusations of a relationship with a woman, ordering that a girl from the boy’s family be given in “vani” as compensation.

According to reports, a video of the jirga has gone viral on social media, showing the informal gathering making the decision. The situation escalated after the boy reportedly refused to accept the jirga’s verdict, following which the jirga allegedly issued a death order against him.

Police registered a case on behalf of the state against 12 suspects and have arrested 8 individuals so far, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining 4 accused.

Authorities have condemned the illegal jirga system, which continues to operate in parts of Sindh despite being outlawed, and have pledged strict action against those involved.
