UK Prime Minister Under Pressure as Four Ministers Resign, Calls for Starmer’s Exit Grow

LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting political pressure after poor local election results triggered growing demands for his resignation within the ruling Labour Party.
According to British media reports, four cabinet ministers have resigned in protest, while more than 80 Labour members of parliament have called on Starmer to either step down immediately or provide a clear timetable for leaving office.
At the same time, over 100 Labour MPs have publicly backed Starmer, urging the party to maintain his leadership amid the ongoing political turmoil.
British broadcasters reported that at least 81 MPs are required to formally begin the process of selecting a new party leader, intensifying speculation over a possible leadership challenge.
Prime Minister Starmer rejected the calls for his resignation during a cabinet meeting, saying he accepts responsibility for the party’s disappointing election performance but stressed that the government must remain focused on governing the country and addressing public concerns.
He added that the Labour Party has a clear mechanism for leadership change, but no formal process has been initiated so far.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy expressed full support for Starmer, stating that no opposition group currently has enough backing within the party to remove him from office.
Political analysts say Labour’s weak performance in the recent local elections has exposed internal divisions within the party, increasing uncertainty in British politics.
