Shabnim Ismail Makes Surprise Return to South Africa Women’s Squad for T20 World Cup After Retirement

CAPE TOWN: South Africa has announced a strong squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, with the surprise return of veteran fast bowler Shabnim Ismail, who had previously retired from international cricket in 2023.
The 37-year-old pace bowler’s comeback has become the highlight of the squad announcement, as she is set to once again represent the national team on the world stage.
According to cricket reports, South Africa will be led by captain Laura Wolvaardt, while experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has also returned to the squad after recovering from illness. Former captain Dane van Niekerk, who had earlier reversed her retirement, is also part of the World Cup lineup.
The squad also includes key players such as Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, Chloe Tryon, and Ayabonga Khaka. Young all-rounder Kayla Reyneke is set to feature in her first senior World Cup, while wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso has returned after recovering from injury.
Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi praised Ismail’s inclusion, calling her return a major boost for the team. He said her experience and passion would be valuable, adding that she still has a strong desire to contribute significantly to South African cricket.
Since her retirement, Ismail has remained active in franchise cricket around the world. She was part of the Mumbai Indians squad that won the Women’s Premier League in 2025 and has featured in several global leagues, including the WBBL, The Hundred, and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League, playing 92 T20 international matches in her career.
Selector convener Clinton du Preez said maintaining continuity in the squad was important, as the core group of players has developed into a strong unit over recent years.
