Free Press Essential for Accountability and Transparency, Say President Zardari and PM Shehbaz on World Press Freedom Day

Islamabad: On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that a free and responsible press is vital for accountability, transparency, and democratic stability.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged journalists to curb the spread of propaganda, fake news, and unverified information, stressing that responsible journalism plays a decisive role in maintaining peace and security in the modern era. He noted that Pakistan prioritizes dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts and is actively working to reduce regional tensions.
The prime minister praised the national media for promoting unity and presenting Pakistan’s stance with clarity and restraint during critical moments. He added that the media kept the public informed and countered misinformation effectively, highlighting its constructive role in shaping public opinion.
Sharif also warned that the rapid spread of fake news and organized disinformation campaigns poses a serious threat to national harmony and global reputation. He called on journalists to uphold the highest standards of verification, integrity, and professionalism, even in the fast-paced digital age, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari stated that peace is not possible without truth, underscoring the crucial role of journalism in society. He warned that disinformation is distorting democratic discourse and noted that journalists around the world face harassment and pressure.
The president expressed concern over the irresponsible use of social media platforms and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to press freedom, citing constitutional guarantees under Article 19. He said a free media is a symbol of a strong nation and is indispensable for ensuring accountability and transparency.
Zardari further stressed the importance of accuracy over speed in reporting and highlighted the need for a reliable information system to counter organized misinformation campaigns. He paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty and called for ensuring a safe environment for media professionals while maintaining high ethical standards.
