Power Breakdown at Dhabeji Pumping Station Raises Fears of Water Shortage in Karachi

Karachi: A power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has raised concerns about a possible disruption in water supply across the city.
According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, the outage could impact the distribution system, with reports indicating that two major supply lines have been affected due to back pressure.
Power utility K-Electric confirmed that the issue was caused by a fault in the main cable at the pumping station. Despite the fault, electricity supply to 18 out of 22 pumping motors remained operational.
The company added that alternative arrangements have been made to restore power to the remaining four motors, helping to minimize disruption.
The situation comes as Karachi is already facing water supply challenges. On April 25, several pumps at the Dhabeji facility were shut down for maintenance and connection of a new line, with seven pumps closed for two days and two others taken offline for a week, affecting water availability in different parts of the city.
