Karachi Mayor Warns of Action Against Shops Producing “Karachi Ko Haq Do” Banners

Karachi: Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab has said that shopkeepers producing “Karachi Ko Haq Do” banners may face sealing of their businesses, as he criticized the campaign and its political messaging.
Speaking at a ceremony, the mayor said that placing such banners in the city would not resolve Karachi’s issues. He added that he was considering action against businesses involved in producing them.
During his address, he also announced the provision of 20 electric motorcycles for the vigilance squad of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), highlighting steps toward infrastructure protection and promotion of green energy.
Murtaza Wahab stated that wardens have been removed from protocol duties and assigned to the vigilance squad, emphasizing that all resources are being redirected toward public service. He said the squad will monitor illegal posters, wall chalking, banner installations, theft of streetlights, and damage to city infrastructure. It will also take action against drug use in public spaces such as under bridges.
He further said that development work is carried out by KMC but often damaged by others, which is why the vigilance squad has been formed.
The mayor also announced that the electric motorcycles are not for protocol use but belong to the city and will be used by KMC staff across different areas.
He added that Karachi is being shifted toward green energy, noting that the KMC building has already been converted to solar power, while hospitals and pumping stations are also being solarized. Future plans include further fuel savings and gradual transition of transport to electric vehicles.
Murtaza Wahab claimed that several development projects, including Lyari Transformation and Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan, were completed by KMC but others were taking credit for them. He criticized political opponents and called for unity, saying that political rivalry should not hinder Karachi’s development.
