Sharmila Farooqui Faces Criticism After Vacation in Turkey Following “Karachi is Paris” Remark

Karachi: Pakistani politician Sharmila Farooqui has come under social media criticism after she traveled to Turkey for a holiday shortly after a statement in which she compared Karachi to Paris.
Sharmila Farooqui, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), is known for her strong association with the party and her political background rooted in a well-known political family. Over the years, she has represented the party in various capacities, focusing on urban development, women’s empowerment, and public welfare initiatives in Karachi.
She is married to businessman Hasham Riaz Sheikh and has a son. The family is currently vacationing in Turkey, and Farooqui has shared images from the trip on her social media accounts.

The controversy began after a recent appearance on a private television program, where she stated that living in Karachi felt like living in Paris and that she would prefer Karachi over any city in the world. The comment quickly went viral and sparked mixed reactions online.
Social media users reacted sharply when her Turkey vacation surfaced shortly after the statement. Critics pointed out the contrast between her praise of Karachi and her choice of an international holiday destination.
One user commented, “She left ‘Paris (Karachi)’ for Istanbul.” Another sarcastically asked, “Is she not enjoying the Paris of Pakistan?” Others mocked the situation, suggesting she should experience everyday travel in Karachi upon her return.
The incident has once again triggered debate on social media about public statements made by politicians and their personal lifestyle choices.
