Punjab Government Bans Purchase of Petrol Vehicles for Official Use

Islamabad (April 1, 2026): Punjab Government has imposed a ban on the purchase of petrol-powered vehicles for government departments.
Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Punjab’s Finance Minister, announced that moving forward, only hybrid or electric vehicles will be procured for official use. The government aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
The minister warned that if global conditions, particularly war-related disruptions, persist, the government may have no choice but to increase petroleum product prices. He highlighted that fuel consumption in Pakistan has been rising by 7–10% weekly, and continued growth could force further price hikes. Pakistan imports 81% of its petroleum products from the Middle East, making local prices highly sensitive to international market fluctuations.
