Hateem (Hijr Ismail): A Sacred Witness to the History of the Kaaba and a Source of Spiritual Blessings

Islamabad: Hijr Ismail, also known as Al-Hateem, is a significant site located on the northern side of the Kaaba within Masjid al-Haram. Despite its simple structure, the site holds deep historical and religious importance in Islam.

According to historical traditions, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismail originally included this area within the foundations of the Kaaba during its construction. However, before the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad, the Quraysh tribe rebuilt the Kaaba but excluded this portion due to limited financial resources. As a result, the semi-circular enclosure remains outside the main structure today.

The low curved wall of Hijr Ismail stands approximately 1.3 meters high and 30 centimeters wide, with its arc located about 21 meters from the Kaaba’s wall. Historical accounts suggest that Hajar (Hagar) and Prophet Ismail lived in this area, where their livestock were also kept. The term “Hijr” refers to a space that is enclosed or separated.

Throughout Islamic history, Hijr Ismail has remained an integral element associated with the Kaaba. A notable change occurred during the time of Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, who reconstructed the Kaaba on the original foundations of Prophet Ibrahim and temporarily included the Hijr within the structure. Later, during the Umayyad period, it was restored to its present form.

Today, offering prayers within Hijr Ismail is considered highly virtuous. According to narrations attributed to Prophet Muhammad, praying in this area carries the reward equivalent to praying inside the Kaaba.

As part of ongoing maintenance of Masjid al-Haram, special attention has been given to the site. The semi-circular wall is constructed with polished white marble, and the flooring is designed with fine marble to harmonize with the mosque’s overall architecture.

Hijr Ismail continues to stand as a powerful symbol of Islamic history and spirituality, preserving centuries of legacy at the heart of Islam’s holiest mosque.
