“Surgery Should Be on Selection Committee, Not Team,” Says Shahid Afridi After Bangladesh Series Loss

Karachi: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has strongly criticized the selection committee following Pakistan’s poor performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and a 2-1 series defeat against Bangladesh national cricket team.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Afridi said that despite having experienced members, the selection committee lacks clarity on which players are suitable for captaincy in different formats.

He also criticized the decision to drop senior ODI players based on T20 performances, calling it a flawed approach.

Afridi remarked that under the pretext of “surgery,” young and inexperienced players are being inducted into the squad and even handed key roles. “The surgery should be done on the selection committee, not the team,” he said.

He further pointed out that some selected players have only played a handful of first-class matches, adding that Pakistan’s domestic cricket system is not currently producing players ready to immediately perform at the international level.

Afridi’s remarks come after Pakistan’s recent ODI series loss to Bangladesh, which has sparked renewed debate over team selection and management decisions.
