Punjab Home Department: All Afghan Nationals Without Valid Visas Must Return

LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has stated that all Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan without valid visas are required to return to their home country, as authorities continue a province-wide crackdown on illegal foreign residents.

According to a spokesperson for the department’s Foreign National Security Cell, the repatriation campaign is being carried out in line with the federal government’s policy. Since 2023, nearly two million undocumented Afghan nationals have been repatriated from Pakistan, including more than 150,000 from Punjab alone.

The spokesperson said the figures reflect the effective strategy and active administrative measures taken by the Punjab government. Under the Government of Pakistan’s clear policy, the stay of Afghan nationals without acceptable visas is considered illegal. Therefore, all Afghan citizens except those holding valid visas are required to leave the country.

Currently, 37 holding centers are operational across Punjab, housing 69 Afghan nationals who are being processed and repatriated after completion of necessary documentation. These centers provide temporary accommodation, registration, and arrangements for return.

The Punjab government has recently completed inspections at public places, residential areas, seminaries, and educational institutions across the province as part of the ongoing crackdown. Authorities also conducted detailed checks of various business activities.

During the campaign, 11,739 undocumented Afghan nationals were identified and repatriated. The spokesperson urged citizens to cooperate with the national mission and report illegal residence, identity fraud, or suspicious activities involving foreign nationals by calling Emergency Helpline 15. Acting on information received through the helpline, 450 Afghan nationals have so far been repatriated.

Facial recognition cameras are also being used to support the identification process. Officials clarified that action is being taken only against individuals residing illegally, while Afghan nationals holding valid visas may continue to conduct business, employment, and other lawful activities within the framework of the law.

The Punjab Home Department’s special Foreign National Security Cell is overseeing monitoring and coordination efforts throughout the province.
