Number of Electricity Consumers Using Less Than 200 Units Jumps to Over 21 Million, Says Energy Minister Owais Leghari
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has revealed that the number of electricity consumers using less than 200 units has increased from 9 million to 21 million.
Speaking on Geo News’ program *Naya Pakistan*, Leghari explained that many wealthy households install solar systems and then fall into the “less than 200 units” category. He emphasized that providing a 70 percent electricity discount to such a large group is beyond the state’s capacity.
The minister further stated that in the recent relief measures, the Prime Minister announced the removal of cross-subsidies for the industrial sector.
Leghari also highlighted that Pakistan’s industrial electricity rates are now comparable to other countries in the region and dismissed claims that electricity costs in Bangladesh are as low as 6–7 cents per unit.
