Pakistani Actor Khalid Anam Questions Access to Indian Designer Outfits After High-Profile Weddings

Karachi: Renowned senior actor Khalid Anam recently raised questions about the use of Indian designer outfits at high-profile political weddings in Pakistan, including the walimas of Junaid Safdar, son of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and the daughter of Faryal Talpur, sister of President Asif Ali Zardari and head of the PPP Women’s Wing.

Khalid Anam commented that it is reportedly being said that the brides wore outfits by Indian designers. He stated that there is nothing wrong with this and emphasized that trade should be open and accessible to everyone. He questioned whether these designer outfits were purchased in person or ordered online and whether ordinary Pakistanis have the same opportunity to buy them.

The actor further noted that if such trade is open to the public, it is welcome, but if only a select few have this privilege, it is unfair. “We should also be allowed to purchase these items,” he added. He emphasized that if something is banned, it should be banned across the board.

Reports indicate that for her mehndi ceremony, Junaid Safdar’s wife, Shanize Ali Roheel, wore an emerald green and multicolor lehenga by renowned Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, featuring heavy embroidery, a multi-panel design, and sequins.

Khalid Anam’s remarks highlight ongoing debates in Pakistan regarding access to foreign designer goods and the perceived privileges of political elites in high-profile social events.
