Bad News for Karachiites as Work on K-IV Project Halted

Karachi: In another worrying development for the residents of Karachi, work on the K-IV water supply project has been suspended on University Road. The augmentation work has been halted due to objections raised by the World Bank and a proposed change in the project’s route.

According to sources, the World Bank raised concerns over environmental pollution and inadequate safety measures during the execution of the augmentation work on University Road. The international lender also expressed reservations regarding the project’s design and route, prompting authorities to suspend construction activities.

Sources said the augmentation work under the K-IV project began on November 10 and was scheduled to be completed by December 30. Under the original plan, a 2.7-kilometer-long pipeline was to be laid from Urdu University to Hassan Square. However, only around 10 percent of the work has been completed so far.

Initially, the design included laying 96-inch and 72-inch diameter pipelines along University Road. Following changes to the design, it has now been decided that only a single track pipeline will be laid from Urdu University to Hassan Square.

Officials stated that work on the project will resume after addressing the World Bank’s objections. However, no final date has been announced for the restoration of construction activities.
