Who Is Behind the Global Rise of ‘Pasoori Girl’ Shae Gill?

Lahore: At just 25 years of age, singer Shae Gill has emerged as an internationally recognized artist, with her meteoric rise largely driven by the massive success of Coke Studio Pakistan’s hit song Pasoori. The track not only propelled her to stardom but also turned her into a global sensation.
Recently appearing on actress Dananeer Mobeen’s show Girls Only, Shae Gill spoke candidly about her unexpected career journey, the challenges that came with fame, and the personal story behind her stage name.
Shae Gill revealed that her real name is Anushe Babar Gill, while “Shae Gill” is her professional name in the music industry. The name “Shae,” which means “eternal” in Persian, was inspired by a resemblance her friends noticed with a character from Game of Thrones. On the advice of her friend Iman, she adopted the stage name “Shae Gill,” which soon gained recognition on a global scale.
She further shared that she originally aspired to become an economist, and that music entered her life purely by chance. According to Shae Gill, her friend Iman played a crucial role in her rise to fame by uploading her recordings on social media, which opened doors for her musical career. “Whatever I am today is because of Iman,” she said.
Shae Gill also reflected on both the positive and negative aspects of fame, noting that increased popularity often brings increased criticism. However, she emphasized that she welcomes constructive criticism, as it helps her grow and evolve as an artist.
It is worth noting that Pasoori, released on February 7, 2022, not only broke multiple records for the Coke Studio Pakistan franchise but also garnered over 930 million views on YouTube, catapulting Shae Gill to international acclaim. With the global success of Pasoori, her journey appears to be just beginning, and more achievements are expected in the days ahead.
