Simple Home Remedies and Dietary Tips to Protect Against Smog-Related Health Issues

Karachi: As smog returns each year with severe health risks, experts recommend a few simple home-based measures and dietary habits that can help minimize its harmful effects.

One of the most important steps is to **stay hydrated throughout the day** by drinking small amounts of water regularly. It is preferable to drink water at **normal room temperature**, while warm beverages can offer even greater benefit during smog-heavy days.

Another essential habit is to **avoid leaving home without breakfast**. A proper morning meal helps **boost the immune system**, providing better protection against pollutants. Experts advise against staying hungry for more than **7 to 8 hours** at any time.

When stepping outdoors, individuals should **cover themselves properly**, including face and nose protection. Those heading to workplaces are advised to **perform ablution (wudu) upon arrival**, as it can help clear smog particles from the nose and throat. Similarly, once back home, taking a quick shower and **inhaling steam** can reduce respiratory irritation.

Before going to bed, avoid drinking **cold juices, water, or milk**. Any beverage consumed at night should ideally be warm. Drinking a small amount of your preferred warm beverage during the day and again before bedtime may help soothe the throat and reduce smog-related discomfort.
