Lawyers in Quetta Protest Against 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments

QUETTA: Lawyers in Quetta staged a protest at the district courts against the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments, led by senior legal expert Ali Ahmed Kurd.
A large number of lawyers participated in the demonstration and raised strong slogans against both amendments.
Protesters stated that the 26th and 27th amendments not only conflict with the spirit of the Constitution but also undermine its fundamental structural framework. According to the lawyers, the proposed amendments negatively affect the balance of institutional powers, citizens’ fundamental rights, and the democratic system.
Lawyers’ leaders warned that these amendments pose serious threats to constitutional supremacy, judicial independence, and civil liberties — all of which are essential pillars of any democratic society.

They emphasized that when the balance of power among state institutions is disrupted, it directly impacts justice, parliamentary processes, and citizens’ rights.
The demonstrators demanded that the government and relevant authorities immediately withdraw the 26th and 27th amendments, stressing that these changes could weaken Pakistan’s constitutional and democratic structure.
Terming the rejection of these amendments a constitutional and moral responsibility of every aware citizen and lawyer, they reiterated that the legal community will not compromise on the supremacy of the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary. They also indicated the possibility of launching a nationwide protest movement if necessary.
