Anushka Sharma Explains Why She Dislikes Receiving Gifts

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma has revealed her unusual stance on receiving gifts, calling the concept “pointless” during a recent interview.

Speaking about her personal philosophy, Anushka said, *“I find this whole idea of gifts very useless. I’ve always had a strange rule: if a boy gave me a gift, I wouldn’t accept it at first. Even if I accepted it later, I would find out its price and then return a gift of equal or higher value. I don’t want anyone to say they spent money on me. For me, it’s a money issue.”*

Clinical psychologist Dr. Rampa Sarkar explained that such behavior is often observed in people who feel indebted or vulnerable when receiving gifts. *“Some individuals, especially those who value their independence or have experienced unrealistic expectations from others, may find receiving gifts uncomfortable because it can affect their sense of self-worth,”* she said.

She added that this attitude may stem from fears of being perceived as a burden or a “gold digger,” a low tolerance for vulnerability, or the belief that relationships must always remain emotionally and financially balanced to feel safe.

According to Dr. Sarkar, giving an equal or more expensive gift in return becomes a coping mechanism to reassure themselves that they are not taking advantage of someone’s kindness.
