Punjab Orders Mandatory Sex Offender Verification for Educational Staff

Lahore: The Prosecutor General of Punjab, Syed Farhad Ali Shah, has issued a directive mandating verification of all faculty and staff against the sex offenders register before recruitment in educational institutions.

In a two-page letter sent to the Secretary Prosecution, he emphasized that the NADRA sex offenders register is an effective tool to ensure child safety in schools and colleges. The letter noted that current recruitment and background checks fail to reveal prior sexual offenses, leaving a significant gap in protecting children.

The directive calls for the establishment of a mechanism by the Law and Justice Department to provide access to the sex offenders register. It mandates that both government and private educational institutions must conduct verification of new recruits and existing employees through the register.

The new policy aims to strengthen child protection in educational institutions by preventing individuals with a history of sexual offenses from being employed in environments with children.
