Over 257,000 British Citizens Left the UK Last Year, ONS Data Reveals

London: The UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released new data showing that **257,000 British citizens left the country last year**, highlighting significant outward migration trends.
According to the latest ONS figures, the UK’s **net migration in 2024 was 20% lower than previously expected**. By December 2024, net migration had dropped sharply to **34,500**, reflecting a notable decrease compared to earlier projections.
Previously, estimates for net migration were based on the International Passenger Survey. However, the revised figures were compiled using updated data from the **Department for Work and Pensions**, providing a more accurate assessment of movement patterns.
Reports further indicate that the number of British citizens returning to the UK has increased, reaching **143,000** during the same period — a rise that partially offsets the outflow of citizens leaving the country.
The new migration figures are expected to influence future government policy debates on immigration and labor market planning.
