Strict Penalties for Failing to Cancel ID Cards of Deceased Individuals: NADRA

**Islamabad (Qudrat Daily)** – The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has reiterated that it is mandatory for close relatives of deceased individuals to cancel their National Identity Cards (NICs), warning of strict penalties for non-compliance.
Under Section 17(1) of the NADRA Ordinance 2000, relatives—including spouses, parents, children, or legal guardians—are required to register the death in the relevant Union Council and obtain a computerized death certificate.
Once the death certificate is issued, the family can cancel the NIC either by visiting a NADRA office or submitting a cancellation request via the Pak ID mobile app.
NADRA emphasized that failure to comply with these legal requirements may result in imprisonment, fines, or both, under the authority’s regulations. Citizens are urged to ensure timely cancellation of ID cards to avoid legal consequences.
