Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar: 27th Constitutional Amendment to Be Presented in Senate

Islamabad:Federal Law Minister *Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar* has announced that the *27th Constitutional Amendment* will soon be presented in the Senate, adding that the proposed changes will become part of the Constitution only after being approved by a *two-thirds majority*.
Speaking to the media after a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister *Shehbaz Sharif*, the law minister said the cabinet was briefed on the proposed amendment, and consensus was reached on the *establishment of a Constitutional Court*. “The 27th Amendment Bill will be tabled in the Senate, and the government, along with its allied parties, will support its passage,” he stated.
Tarar further revealed that after cabinet approval, the amendment will be referred to a *joint committee* to allow detailed discussions on each clause. He emphasized that all legislative efforts are being undertaken *through consultation and consensus* with allied parties, as originally agreed in the *Charter of Democracy*.
He clarified that the matter of *judges’ transfers* will be placed under the jurisdiction of the *Judicial Commission*, addressing longstanding concerns over the role of the Prime Minister or the President in such decisions.
Referring to *Article 243*, Tarar said that Pakistan has learned many lessons from the past regarding strategic and defense matters. “The nature of warfare and strategy has completely changed in the modern era,” he remarked.
He noted that certain *appointments and ranks* such as *Field Marshal, Air Chief,* and *Naval Chief* were previously mentioned in the Army Act but were not included in the 1973 Constitution. The new amendment proposes to formally recognize such ranks, describing them as *honorary and symbolic titles* that could remain *lifetime distinctions* for national heroes.
Concluding his remarks, the law minister reiterated:
> “If the constitutional amendments are passed by a two-thirds majority in Parliament, they will officially become part of the Constitution.”
