Mawra Hocane Says She Could Relate to Her Newlywed Character in “Jama Taqseem” as She Had Been Married Only 10 Days Before Shooting Began

Lahore: Pakistani actress **Mawra Hocane** revealed that when she began filming the popular drama *“Jama Taqseem,”* she had been married for only **10 days**, which helped her deeply understand the emotions of her newlywed character, **Laila**.
The drama, which explores the **complexities of joint family systems** in Pakistani society, has become one of the most talked-about shows on television. Viewers have praised its realistic portrayal of family dynamics, where every character represents a relatable aspect of real life.
In a recent interview with a YouTube channel, Mawra spoke about her role, saying that she has **learned valuable lessons** from playing Laila — particularly how to disagree respectfully without being rude.
“Laila is portrayed as gentle yet strong,” she said. “She stands up for her rights without ever being disrespectful. I learned that one doesn’t need to be aggressive to make a point.”
Mawra shared that, although at times she personally felt Laila should have shown more emotion — especially in scenes like being asked to change clothes right after her wedding — the director reminded her that *“this story isn’t about you; it’s about many women who live through such experiences.”*
She added that since filming began just ten days after her own wedding, she could easily **empathize with Laila’s emotions as a new bride**, even though her real-life circumstances were very different.
Mawra also recounted a touching story from a fan: a young woman contacted her saying that after watching *“Jama Taqseem,”* she decided to **call off her engagement** to a family that resembled Qais’s controlling household in the drama. “It made me so happy to know that our project actually helped someone make a life-changing decision,” Mawra said.
The actress concluded that *“Jama Taqseem”* holds a special place in her heart — both for its message and for how personally she could connect with her role.
