Over 11,000 E-Challans Issued in Karachi Within Three Days as Speed Monitoring System Expands

Karachi:The newly introduced **e-challan system** in Karachi has issued more than **11,000 traffic fines** within just **three days**, according to traffic police data. Among these, **1,755 challans** were issued for **overspeeding** alone.
Many citizens have expressed frustration over the enforcement, saying that while cameras and monitoring devices have been installed across the city, **no visible signboards or speed limit indicators** have been placed to inform drivers. “If challans continue like this, all our earnings will go into paying fines,” one motorist complained.
**DSP Traffic Kashif Nadeem** stated that the e-monitoring system is currently active at several major points, including **Hasan Square, Civic Center, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Nursery, Baloch Colony, Drigh Road, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Clifton (Teen Talwar), and Defence Ittehad Street**. These zones are equipped to detect overspeeding and lane violations automatically.
Interestingly, the system even issued a challan to a **government vehicle used by DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah**, confirming that the fine was legitimate. The **Rs10,000 fine** was issued near **Garden area** after the vehicle’s driver was found **not wearing a seatbelt**.
Since the system’s launch on **October 28**, more than **Rs12.5 million (PKR)** worth of fines have been issued in just the **first six hours**, covering **2,662 challans** — 419 for overspeeding and 3 for lane violations.
Authorities say the system aims to **improve road safety and reduce accidents**, though many drivers have urged the city administration to **display clear signage** about speed limits and violations to ensure transparency.
