Governor Balochistan Jafar Khan Mandokhail Highlights Challenge of Fake News, Calls for Responsible Media Use

Quetta:Governor Balochistan **Jafar Khan Mandokhail** has said that the growing spread of **fake news on media platforms** poses a serious challenge for governments worldwide in tackling misinformation and propaganda. He emphasized that legislation in this regard is particularly difficult as it requires maintaining a delicate balance with **freedom of expression**, a fundamental constitutional right.
Speaking at the **three-day conference on Human Rights and Media Literacy** organized by Individual Land, Governor Mandokhail noted that while a complete ban on social media could raise international concerns, the negative impact of fake news can be reduced through **seminars, conferences, and workshops** aimed at encouraging positive use of media and creating a sense of responsibility.
He stated that media is a crucial part of daily life, but awareness of information technology and controlling its negative effects are equally important. He also highlighted the **constructive role of criticism**, saying it leads to correction and improvement.
The governor acknowledged participants’ concerns about the flaws of social media but pointed out that **solutions and remedies were not clearly identified**. He stressed that along with pointing out problems, diagnosis and treatment are also necessary.
Mandokhail further said that despite challenges, media has numerous benefits—it serves as an **effective source of knowledge and information**, keeps people updated with fast-changing global developments, and provides students with access to vast online academic and research material.
He admitted that the rise of social media has dimmed the influence of traditional press and news channels, but cautioned that **disinformation and fake news leave deeply negative impacts on society**. The remedy, he said, lies in the **responsible use of media** and fostering **positive social behavior**.
The governor urged teachers to play their role in **constructive mindset-building**, focusing not only on quality education but also on shaping the character and ethics of students, so that the dream of a **healthy and progressive society** can be realized.
