Shehbaz Sharif Calls Meeting with Trump Encouraging, Says U.S. Ready to Invest in Trade, IT and Other Sectors

New York/New Jersey: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump as encouraging, stating that America is ready to invest in Pakistan’s trade, IT, minerals, AI, counter-terrorism, and crypto sectors.
Speaking to the media in New Jersey, the Prime Minister said President Trump desires peace and had played a key role in brokering the recent ceasefire between Pakistan and India. He expressed gratitude to the U.S. president for addressing tariff issues and noted that Pakistan-U.S. trade agreements would be based on mutual interests, including fair valuation of minerals.
Reflecting on the recent conflict with India, Shehbaz Sharif credited Pakistan’s armed forces for their bravery, stating that between May 6–10, Pakistani troops achieved a decisive victory. He praised Field Marshal Asim Munir for his strategic leadership, highlighting the downing of seven Indian aircraft and extensive counterattacks that forced India to accept a ceasefire.
The Prime Minister also spoke about his successful visit to Saudi Arabia, calling the reception “the grandest in 40 years.” On the economic front, he said inflation, which stood at 32% when he took office, had dropped to single digits within 18 months, while the policy rate was reduced from 22.5% to 11%. He lauded overseas Pakistanis for remitting $38.5 billion in FY 2024–25, helping stabilize the economy at the micro level.
In addition, Shehbaz Sharif met UN Secretary-General António Guterres, raising concerns over Kashmir, India’s violation of the Indus Waters Treaty, and its sponsorship of terrorism in Pakistan. He urged for a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute under UN Security Council resolutions. He also voiced Pakistan’s strong support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and called for additional climate financing for vulnerable countries. Secretary-General Guterres praised Pakistan’s principled role at the UN.
Following his U.S. visit, Shehbaz Sharif departed for Geneva to visit former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, before proceeding to London for a three-day stay.
