Permanent Ban Imposed on Domestic Gas Connections; 3 Million Applications to Be Cancelled

ISLAMABAD: The Petroleum Division has issued a framework approved by the federal cabinet to Sui Southern and Sui Northern Gas companies, imposing a permanent ban on new domestic gas connections and directing the cancellation of 3 million pending applications.

According to the new framework, new connections will only be provided on imported gas under nine specific conditions. Sui Southern and Sui Northern will be allowed to provide connections to 50% of applicants within a year under an urgent fee scheme, while those paying the urgent fee will receive connections within three months.

Consumers whose domestic gas connections have remained disconnected for one year will also be shifted to imported gas. However, the tariff for imported gas connections will be 70% higher compared to indigenous gas.

The move marks a major policy shift, reflecting the government’s effort to address Pakistan’s growing natural gas shortage through reliance on imported supplies.
