Asia Cup Clash: India Snubs Pakistan in Post-Match Handshake Controversy

Dubai: A storm of controversy erupted at the Asia Cup T20 in Dubai when the Indian team openly violated sporting traditions by refusing to shake hands with Pakistani players.

The dispute traces back to a few days earlier when Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav shook hands with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, triggering backlash and harsh criticism from Indian fans and media. Under visible pressure, Yadav avoided shaking hands with Pakistan’s captain Salman Ali Agha during the toss.

The situation worsened after India’s victory when the entire Indian squad walked straight into the dressing room without greeting their opponents. Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha and head coach Mike Hesson even approached the Indian camp, but no player stepped out.

Traditionally, cricket players shake hands after every match, with captains greeting each other at the toss. This time, however, India chose to abandon that long-standing courtesy.

Analysts suggest that the unusual behavior reflects India’s broader national pressure, especially in the aftermath of its military setbacks earlier this year, including the loss of several Rafale jets to Pakistan’s forces.

At the post-match press conference, Yadav defended his actions, saying, *“Some things are above sportsmanship.”*

Pakistani coach Mike Hesson expressed disappointment: *“We were ready to shake hands at the end, but our opponents had already locked themselves in. It was a sad way to end a hard-fought match.”*
