Trump Threatens 200% Tariff on China Over Magnet Supply

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has warned China of imposing a 200% tariff if Beijing fails to supply magnets to the United States.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said, *“China must provide magnets to the U.S., otherwise we will have to impose a 200% tariff or something similar. We hold the power of tariffs, and if we apply 100% or 200%, there will be no business with China — and if that becomes necessary, we have no problem doing it.”*
The president further stressed that while both the U.S. and China have leverage over magnets, Washington has additional options that could inflict significant economic damage on Beijing.
Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing trade tensions between the two nations. China has become increasingly sensitive about its control over rare earth elements and their supply chains.
In April, Beijing added several rare earth materials and magnets to its export restriction list, a retaliatory move in response to U.S. tariff hikes.
