Heavy Monsoon Rains Expected in Karachi from August 18; Urban Flooding Likely on August 20–21

Karachi is expected to experience a fresh spell of **monsoon rains** beginning the **night of August 18**, with the potential for **heavy downpours** and **urban flooding** on **August 20 and 21**, according to the **Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)**.
The PMD has warned that a **cyclonic circulation** currently located over **Rajasthan, India**, is likely to move towards Karachi by **Sunday evening**, initially bringing **light to moderate rainfall**. However, by **Wednesday and Thursday (August 20–21)**, **thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall** are expected in the city.
**Anjum Nazeer Zaigham**, spokesperson for the PMD, told Express News that satellite imagery confirms the presence of a strong monsoon system over Rajasthan. This system is currently causing rainfall in parts of **rural Sindh**, including **Tharparkar** and **Umerkot**.
As this system advances southwest, it is likely to affect **Karachi from Monday evening onward**, bringing multiple **intense rainfall spells** on **August 20 and 21**, potentially leading to **urban flooding** in low-lying areas. While the PMD has not issued a precise rainfall estimate in millimeters, the system has the capacity to bring **intense cloudbursts**.
Meanwhile, **Weather.pk**, an unofficial weather forecasting platform, has also confirmed the movement of the cyclonic circulation from **Rajasthan toward southern Pakistan**, impacting wind patterns and lowering the speed of sea breezes in Karachi. As a result, **lower-level cloud formations** and **light drizzles** could occur in the northeastern parts of the city prior to the heavy rainfall.
According to Weather.pk, **2 to 3 heavy rainfall spells** are expected in Karachi on **August 20**, with the possibility of **thunderstorms and short-term intense showers**.
