Defense Minister Khawaja Asif Claims Former Army Chief Gen. Bajwa Appointed on His Father-in-Law’s Recommendation

Islamabad:A recent video of Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Defence, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, has gone viral on social media, in which he makes a startling revelation regarding the appointment of former Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Speaking on a private television program, Khawaja Asif claimed that General Bajwa was appointed as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on the recommendation of his father-in-law, retired General Ijaz Amjad. Asif stated that he personally approached General Ijaz Amjad during the decision-making process.
According to the minister, General Ijaz had close ties with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif since the 1980s, when Ijaz served as Chief of Staff to General Mirza Aslam Beg. “General Ijaz gave personal assurances that if any conflict arose in the future, he would stand with Nawaz Sharif and not his son-in-law,” said Khawaja Asif.
He further added that General Ijaz was instrumental in convincing Bajwa not to resist the appointment process and assured PML-N leadership of his loyalty. Asif suggested that in the entire matter, General Ijaz Amjad’s influence outweighed that of then-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The statement has triggered widespread debate in political and military circles, raising new questions about the role of personal relationships and political assurances in key military appointments in Pakistan.
No official response has yet been issued by General Bajwa or the Pakistan Army regarding these claims.
