Trump Imposes Sanctions on 7 Indian Companies Over Iran Oil Trade Following 25% Tariff Announcement

Washington:In a sharp escalation of trade and foreign policy actions, **U.S. President Donald Trump** has imposed **sanctions on seven Indian companies** following his announcement of a **25% tariff and additional penalties** against India.

According to **U.S. media reports**, the sanctioned companies, all based in **India**, are accused of engaging in **oil trade with Iran**. The **U.S. State Department** alleges that the **revenue Iran earns from oil exports** is used to **destabilize the Middle East** and **oppress its own people**.

In total, the U.S. has moved to sanction **20 companies** involved in the **Iranian petroleum and petrochemical trade**, alongside **10 ships** believed to be aiding these transactions. Of the 20 companies, **seven are located in India**, making India a notable target in this latest round of sanctions.

This development follows President Trump’s earlier statement on **Wednesday**, where he criticized India on his social media platform **Truth Social**, saying:

> “India is a good friend, but we’ve done very little business with them because of their **high tariffs** and **harsh non-tariff trade barriers**, which are among the most extreme and unacceptable.”

Trump’s actions mark a significant moment in **U.S.–India relations**, combining **economic pressure** with **geopolitical signaling**. The dual measures — sanctions on companies and increased tariffs — reflect Washington’s growing frustration with India’s trade practices and its dealings with **sanctioned Iranian oil**.

Analysts believe these moves could further strain ties between the two nations, especially as India balances its strategic relationships with both **the U.S. and regional players** like **Iran**.
