GDA Focuses on Economic Growth and Financial Independence with New Development Projects in Gwadar

GWADAR:A crucial meeting, chaired by the Director General of the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA), Moeen-ur-Rehman Khan, was held to review proposed commercial and economic projects aimed at making the institution financially stable and self-sustaining. The meeting also assessed strategies to increase revenue and enhance the development pace of key projects.
Various department heads participated in the session, including Chief Engineer Haji Syed Mohammad, Director Town Planning Shahid Ali, Director Finance Zakir Majid, Building Controller Faisal Khatak, Director Land Shay Mansoor, Environmental Director Rasool Bakhsh, Deputy Director Town Planning Abdul Razzaq, and other concerned officials. The attendees provided detailed briefings on ongoing and proposed profitable ventures within their respective departments.
**Key Projects to Launch Soon**
The Director General emphasized the urgent need for modern, profitable, and long-term planning to make the GDA financially self-sufficient. In line with this vision, projects like the Central Business District and the 500-acre GDA Housing Scheme are set to be launched soon, with a focus on accelerating the pace of work.
Furthermore, the meeting discussed various projects under **Public-Private Partnerships (PPP)** and **Joint Venture models**. These projects include modern warehouses, logistics centers, business and residential schemes, water sports beaches, resorts, a hill station on Koh Mehdi, family parks, restaurants, amusement parks, and other recreational facilities aimed at boosting tourism and economic activity in Gwadar.
**Financial Self-Sufficiency and Economic Growth**
The Director General stated that these initiatives will not only contribute to the economic development of Gwadar but will also enable GDA to meet its financial needs without relying on external resources. “The focus is on making the authority self-sustaining, ensuring that it operates independently to fulfill its obligations,” said Moeen-ur-Rehman Khan.
**Water Supply and Distribution Challenges**
Earlier in the day, a separate meeting was chaired by the Director General to assess the water supply system in Gwadar. Chief Engineer Haji Syed Mohammad, Project Director Water Meherjan Baloch, Deputy Project Director Mohammad Akbar, and Assistant Engineer Qambar Baloch also attended the session.
The meeting was informed that the GDA is currently supplying around **3.3 million gallons of water** daily to Gwadar and surrounding areas, including Kappar, 35 nearby villages, the Jeddah Industrial Zone, New Gwadar International Airport, and Gwadar Cantonment. Due to the ongoing water supply situation, the allocation for some areas has been reduced by 50%. The cost of daily water supply stands at approximately **PKR 827,000**.
Officials also pointed out that certain departments, such as the Public Health Department and the New Town Scheme, have not been paying their dues on time, while entities like the Gwadar Airport, Cantonment, and the Industrial Zone have been cooperating with regular payments.
**Addressing Distribution Issues**
The meeting highlighted the ongoing issues affecting water supply, including distribution line breakdowns, prolonged power outages, voltage fluctuations, and local administrative barriers. GDA and the Public Health Department are working together to resolve these problems on a priority basis.
**Commitment to Gwadar’s Growth**
Moeen-ur-Rehman Khan reiterated the goal of transforming Gwadar into a **smart, modern, and self-sufficient port city**. He emphasized that transparent governance, financial autonomy, and the overall development of Gwadar remain the core priorities of the GDA.
The Director General affirmed that the GDA would continue to take all necessary steps to improve its reputation as an active, autonomous, and public-friendly institution, ensuring the progress of Gwadar as a thriving economic hub.
