Senior Journalist Accuses Federal Ministers of Profiteering from Sugar Price Hike During Live TV Show
Lahore:In a heated exchange on a private TV program, senior journalist **Nadeem Malik** accused federal cabinet ministers of benefiting from the recent surge in sugar prices, directly confronting Interior Minister **Rana Sanaullah**. The allegation was strongly denied by the **Prime Minister’s advisor**, but Malik remained firm on his claims.
During the program, Rana Sanaullah admitted that despite a sugar surplus, **an artificial shortage was created**, allowing certain groups to profit. He said that **middlemen played the most significant role**, and the authorities failed to take proper action against key players, calling the situation the work of a “mafia.”
Nadeem Malik, however, went further, alleging that members of the **current federal cabinet** were **directly involved** in facilitating the sugar export process, despite Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s clear directive that export would only be allowed if the price remained below **Rs. 140 per kg**.
> “I’m repeating my accusation,” said Malik. “Just like ministers from Imran Khan’s government were involved previously, **your ministers are now involved**. They sold sugar and made money off it. The price went from Rs. 140 to Rs. 200 — who pocketed the Rs. 60 per kg difference?”
While Rana Sanaullah maintained that **middlemen (Aarthis)** and a network of profiteers were to blame, Nadeem Malik insisted that federal ministers had a **facilitating role in the export process**, enabling artificial price hikes. He claimed that decisions to allow large sugar exports triggered early increases in market prices, to the benefit of select insiders.
The debate has reignited concerns over **price manipulation**, **governance failure**, and **accountability** in the handling of essential commodities like sugar.
