Outrage Erupts Over Brutal Honor Killing in Balochistan: Senators Demand Justice

Islamabad:A shocking video depicting a woman and a man being killed following an illegal tribal jirga (court) decision in Balochistan has gone viral, sparking widespread outrage across Pakistan. During a session in the Senate, members from both the government and opposition strongly condemned the horrific incident, demanding that the perpetrators be publicly executed and that the Chief Minister of Balochistan, his cabinet, and the Inspector General of Police resign for failing to prevent the tragedy.

Senator Zarkha Sahwarwaradi initiated a motion urging the government to take decisive action to eradicate gender discrimination in society. She stressed the need for immediate action, pointing out that women in the region are not safe, and the government must address this growing issue seriously.

Senator Sherry Rehman condemned the incident, calling it not just a women’s issue, but one that affects the entire society. “No jirga, regardless of the relationship between the man and the woman, has the right to take the law into their hands,” she emphasized. Senator Rehman also informed the house that Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had taken serious note of the incident and directed the Chief Minister of Balochistan to ensure no one escapes justice. So far, 13 suspects have been arrested in connection with the killings.

Senator Khalida also raised concerns, pointing out that such barbaric acts continue in the rural areas of Sindh and Balochistan. She questioned the government’s silence in the face of these illegal jirgas and called for their immediate dismantling to prevent further atrocities.

Senator Aimal Wali Khan, expressing deep grief, reminded the assembly that Islam grants women a high status, and such practices must not be tolerated. He suggested that stringent laws be enacted to punish members of these illegal jirgas, proposing public executions at D-Chowk as a deterrent to prevent future atrocities.

This incident has brought the spotlight on the unchecked power of illegal jirgas, raising critical questions about the rule of law in rural Pakistan. As the investigation progresses, many are waiting to see if the government will take meaningful steps to prevent further gender-based violence and abuse of power by these parallel justice systems.
