Massive Inflation in Pakistan Over Three Years: Journalist Stuns Government Representative with Official Price Hike Data

Lahore:In a televised talk show, senior journalist Sanaullah left Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ehsan Afzal speechless after presenting staggering figures on inflation over the past three years, based on official data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Sanaullah compared the prices of essential commodities from April—around the time of the no-confidence motion against former Prime Minister Imran Khan—to their current levels in 2025. He revealed that gas prices have surged from Rs. 141 per MMBTU to Rs. 1,976, a shocking 1,200%+ increase. Petrol has risen from Rs. 152 per liter to Rs. 272, and diesel from Rs. 147 to Rs. 284.

He added that electricity tariffs have also increased by 150% to 200%. Beef, which cost Rs. 600 per kg three years ago, is now priced at Rs. 1,110 per kg. Rice has doubled from Rs. 75 to Rs. 155 per kg. A 20 kg bag of wheat flour (atta), previously priced at Rs. 988, now ranges between Rs. 1,505 and Rs. 1,934. Milk, which was Rs. 110 per liter, has reached an average of Rs. 220.

These statistics, backed by government data, highlight the relentless inflation that has severely impacted the daily lives of ordinary citizens. The journalist’s detailed breakdown offered a sobering reality check for the government, which appeared unable to offer a convincing rebuttal.

Analysts say this dramatic rise in essential commodity prices reflects deep-rooted economic challenges and public frustration over the government’s handling of inflation.
