Indian Influencer ‘Kamal Kaur Bhabhi’ Murdered Over ‘Objectionable’ Content; Social Media Erupts in Outrage

Mumbai:The murder of Indian social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, has sparked intense outrage and debate across social media platforms, especially in the state of Punjab.
The 30-year-old influencer, who had over 400,000 followers on Instagram, was found dead in a car in Bathinda on June 11. She was known for creating content that some viewers labeled as “suggestive” or “vulgar,” sparking both popularity and criticism.
Punjab police have arrested two Sikh men, aged 32 and 21, in connection with the murder. Authorities identified the prime suspect as Amritpal Singh Mehron, who allegedly orchestrated the entire crime. According to Bathinda Police Chief Amanit Kondal, Mehron objected to Kumari’s content, claiming it violated Punjabi cultural norms and Sikh traditions.
In various online videos, Amritpal Singh expressed anger over what he considered immoral content produced by social media influencers. He criticized the use of honorific Sikh titles like “Kaur” and “Singh” by non-Sikhs in what he described as disrespectful and inappropriate videos.
Following the murder, Mehron reportedly released videos justifying his actions and issued threats to other influencers. “It’s about the upbringing of generations. What will children think — that our elders were shameless?” he said in one clip. He also stated that Kumari’s killing “should have happened seven years ago” and warned others to stop sharing similar content, threatening lethal consequences.
Police confirmed that Amritpal Singh fled to the United Arab Emirates through Amritsar Airport and remains at large. In a separate case, Punjab Police have also registered a fresh FIR against him for threatening Deepika Luthra, another social media influencer based in Amritsar.
Kanchan Kumari, who lived with her family in Ludhiana’s Lakshman Nagar, had traveled to Bathinda on June 9 for a promotional assignment. Her family reportedly lost contact with her later that night.
The incident has reignited debates in India about freedom of expression, online content moderation, and rising extremism. While some have defended the need to regulate explicit content, many argue that legal avenues exist and that violence can never be justified.
