UK Tightens Laws, Making Citizenship Nearly Impossible for Migrants Entering Illegally

The UK government has further tightened immigration laws, making it almost impossible for migrants who enter the country illegally via small boats or by hiding in vehicles to obtain British citizenship. According to BBC, the Home Office has issued a statement confirming that migrants who enter the UK illegally will have their citizenship applications rejected.
Under the new guidelines, anyone who enters the UK illegally, whether by boat or hiding in a vehicle, will generally be denied citizenship, regardless of how long they have been in the country. This change in policy aims to curb illegal immigration and strengthen border security.
The decision has been met with criticism from human rights organizations, the Refugee Council, and some Labour Party members. MP Stella Creasy argued that this change will result in refugees being treated as second-class citizens.
The new measures were outlined in updated guidelines issued to visa and immigration staff on Monday. The guidelines state that starting from February 10, 2025, any individual who enters the UK illegally will typically be refused citizenship, regardless of how long they have been in the country.
An additional clause also specifies that those who enter without the proper visa or travel authorization and undertake dangerous journeys, such as crossing in small boats or hiding in vehicles, will be denied citizenship. Previously, migrants who entered the UK illegally had to wait at least 10 years before their citizenship applications were considered, but the new rules have made the process even more difficult for them.
