JUI Leaders Urged Us to Impose Governor’s Rule, Saying They Wanted to Get Rid of PTI Government: Mohsin Naqvi

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, responding to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in the Senate, said JUI leaders had themselves urged the government to impose governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming they wanted to get rid of the provincial government.

Speaking in the Senate, Naqvi said Maulana Fazlur Rehman had wrongly claimed a day earlier that the government had visited Iran to discuss a defence agreement. He said he had personally respected the JUI-F chief, but his remarks about spitting on the state had left little room for that respect to continue.

“Some things do not suit a politician,” Naqvi said, referring to Fazlur Rehman’s statement. He criticised what he described as a transactional attitude towards the state, alleging that some politicians considered the state worthy of respect only as long as they continued to receive benefits from it.

“According to them, the state remains like a mother as long as they receive benefits from it. When they do not get a share in the government, they turn against the state,” the interior minister said.

Naqvi added that Fazlur Rehman should not expect government positions, financial benefits or election tickets, and stressed that those who criticised others should also have the courage to listen to a response.

“Maulana Fazlur Rehman has left no room for respect,” he said.

During Naqvi’s speech, opposition members created a commotion in the House. Responding to the uproar, the interior minister said he was not discussing a personal matter but addressing the language used by Fazlur Rehman.

He further alleged that certain political leaders used Islam to advance their personal interests.

“These are the same people who used to come to us and say, ‘Impose governor’s rule and get us rid of them,’” Naqvi said, claiming that JUI leaders had previously called for action against the provincial government.

The remarks came amid a heated exchange in the Senate over Fazlur Rehman’s criticism of the government and the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
