Pakistan steps up crackdown on illegal online gambling and betting

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities are stepping up efforts to combat illegal online gambling and betting, citing concerns over financial fraud, cybercrime and the growing risks posed by unregulated digital platforms.
Illegal betting websites and mobile applications can expose users to financial losses, identity theft and the misuse of banking information. Authorities are also concerned about platforms that operate without proper authorisation and lack safeguards for consumers.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) investigates suspected cybercrime, online fraud and unlawful financial transactions. Investigations into alleged gambling networks may involve examining bank accounts, digital payment records and other financial evidence to trace suspicious transactions.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) can also take regulatory action against online platforms under applicable laws and procedures. However, blocking websites and applications may not completely eliminate illegal betting activities, as operators can attempt to move their services to alternative platforms.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious when using unfamiliar online applications, avoid sharing banking credentials and refrain from transferring money to unverified accounts. People who suspect online fraud should preserve transaction records and report the matter to the relevant authorities.
The crackdown highlights the challenges faced by regulators in monitoring digital financial activity and protecting consumers from unregulated gambling operations.
Any allegations against individuals or companies must be established through evidence and the legal process.
